How to Turn Off the Startup Sound on a Sony Bravia TV

by Jeff Grundy Google

Sony has a longstanding reputation for producing high-quality, innovative consumer electronics devices, and its Bravia line of LCD televisions is no exception. Sony Bravia TVs have won numerous design and performance awards all over the world and received many favorable reviews from experts and consumers alike. However, one complaint frequently voiced by owners is the loud startup tone they hear when powering on a Bravia. If you have a Bravia TV and don’t want to hear the startup tone, disabling it is relatively simple in most cases.

Bravia Models with Newer or Updated Firmware

    Step 1

Power on the Sony Bravia TV. Press the blue “Home” button on the Bravia remote.

    Step 2

Scroll to the “Settings” menu option by using the arrow keys, then press the round “+” button in the center of the four arrow keys.

    Step 3

Scroll down to “Sound” and press “+.” Press the "down "arrow to scroll down to the “Startup Sound” option, then press “Enter.”

    Step 4

Press the "down" arrow key once to select “Off.” Press the “+” button to save the change. Press the “Home” button to exit the configuration menu.

Update Firmware on Older Bravia Models

    Step 1

Open your Web browser and navigate to the Sony support website (see Resources.) Download the latest firmware revision for the Bravia line of TVs and save it to your computer.

    Step 2

Connect a USB flash drive to the computer and wait for Windows to detect and initialize it automatically.

    Step 3

Click “Start,” then “Computer.” Open the folder where you saved the “firmware.upd” file you downloaded from the Sony support website. Highlight the “firmware.upd” file name, then press “Ctrl-C” to copy it to the Windows clipboard.

    Step 4

Click the drive letter for the USB flash drive in the Navigation pane of the Windows Explorer window. Right-click on an open area in the USB flash drive folder pane on the right side of the Windows Explorer window, then click “Paste” on the pop-up menu. Alternatively, press “Ctrl-V” to paste the “firmware.upd” file to the root directory of the USB flash drive. Disconnect the USB flash drive from the computer.

    Step 5

Power on the television and insert the flash drive into the USB drive on the side or rear (depending on the model) of the Bravia TV. Press the “Home” button on the remote control.

    Step 6

Scroll down to “Settings” and press the “+” button. Select “System Update” and press the “+” button. Wait a few seconds for the TV to locate the “firmware.upd” file on the USB drive and prompt you to update the firmware on the Bravia television.

    Step 7

Select “Yes” and press the “+” button. When asked to confirm that you want to update the firmware, select “Yes” again. Wait a few minutes for the TV to update the firmware. While the TV updates the firmware, the “Power” indicator light will be green for about 30 seconds, the “Pic Off/Timer” light will flash an amber light slowly and the “Standby” light will be red. After a few minutes, the TV will shut down and restart automatically to complete the firmware update. After successfully completing the update, a message that reads, “The system has been updated” appears on the TV screen.

    Step 8

Turn off the “Startup Sound” option in the Settings area of the Home menu.
