How to Skype Video Chat on an Android Phone

by David Weedmark Google

With the free Skype app for Android, you can use most Android phones to video chat with your friends on Skype just as you would on a computer. When Skype launched the video chat option in 2011, many Android phones could not use the service, but support for additional models was added in subsequent versions of the app. Before trying to video chat on your Android phone, make sure you have downloaded the most recent version of the Skype app.

    Verifying Your Settings

    Step 1

Tap the "Skype" icon on your Android phone.

    Step 2

Tap the "Menu" icon and then tap "More."

    Step 3

Tap "Settings" and then tap "Enable Video Calling" if it is not already enabled. If you do not see this setting, you will not be able to video chat with Skype on this Android phone model.

    Using Skype Video Chat

    Step 1

Tap the "Skype" icon on your Android phone to launch Skype. Tap the "Contacts" icon to see a list of your Skype contacts. Scroll down to see additional contact names. A green check mark appears next to the names of contacts presently online.

    Step 2

Tap the name of any contact who is online. The contact's profile is displayed, including her profile picture, last status update and contact details.

    Step 3

Tap "Skype Video Call" in the Contact Details tab at the bottom of the screen. You will hear a Skype telephone ringing sound and see yourself on the screen while you wait for the other person to answer the call request. When the person answers the call, your video image will be minimized on the side of the screen and your contact's image will fill the rest of the screen.

    Step 4

Tap the screen at any time during the call to see your options. Tap the "Microphone" icon to mute your microphone. Tap the "Video" icon to switch to the forward-facing video camera so the other person can see what you see instead of seeing you. Tap the red "End Call" button to end the call.

    Warnings

    • Skype Mobile video calls are free on the Verizon 4G service with an Android phone at the time of publication. Depending on your cell phone plan, other carriers may charge for the minutes you spend using Skype.
    • No cell phone service charge is billed for Skype-to-Skype calls from a Wi-Fi network, but extended use could result in a charge if you exceed your monthly bandwidth limit.
    • Skype can't access the forward-facing video camera if you are using Android 2.2 or older.
