How to Record a Conversation on an iPhone

by David Weedmark Google

While the Voice Memo app that comes on every iPhone is great for recording face-to-face, in-person conversations, it won't work if you want to record a conversation on the phone. To record your phone calls on the iPhone you will need a third party app. Google Voice works well for recording incoming calls only. To record outgoing calls you will need an app like Recorder or WeTalk. WeTalk can't record incoming calls. Google Voice is free for domestic calls; however, WeTalk and Recorder are not.

    Recording Conversations in Person

    Step 1

Turn on the iPhone and tap the "Utilities" folder. Tap "Voice Memos" to open the app.

    Step 2

Tap the red "Record" button to begin recording from the iPhone's built-in microphone. Tap it again to pause or resume the recording as needed.

    Step 3

Tap the square "Stop" button to stop and save the recording. The Stop button becomes a menu button. Tap it to see a list of your recordings.

    Step 4

Click "Play" to listen to the recording. Click the "Share" button to send it as an MP3 file via email or text message attachment.

    Recording Calls With Google Voice

    Step 1

Install Google Voice on your iPhone if you don't have it already (link in Resources).

    Step 2

Ask someone to call you on your Google Voice account. At present, you can't record outgoing calls on Google Voice.

    Step 3

Press the "4" button when your call is connected. Google Voice announces to you and the other person that the call is being recorded.

    Step 4

Disconnect the call. Google Voice informs you that the recording has been saved to your Google account. You can access the recording from within the app or from the Google Voice Web page (link in Resources) under your call history.

    Recording Calls With Recorder

    Step 1

Install the Recorder app by Retronyms from the App Store on your iPhone.

    Step 2

Tap the Call Recording button. Select a recording option by purchasing 1 hour or 8 hours of recording time. Purchases are made through your Apple ID as an in-app purchase. The amount of recording time available is displayed on the screen.

    Step 3

Call someone from within the app. The number being called is displayed on the screen. Click "Call" to confirm it is the right number. The person being called is informed that the call is being recorded.

    Step 4

Click "End Call." The recording is downloaded to your iPhone and displayed on the screen. Tap the recording to listen. You can also trim the recording as needed by dragging the edge of the recording on the screen.

    Recording Calls With WeTalk

    Step 1

Install the WeTalk app by Innovation Works from the iPhone App Store. Select a service plan from the available options and make a phone call.

    Step 2

Click the "REC" button once the call is connected. At present, you can't record incoming calls using WeTalk.

    Step 3

Tap the "Recordings" tab at the top of the screen to see a list of your recorded calls. Tap the recording to hear it. Download the recordings to your computer using iTunes. Recordings are found in the WePhone options under the iTunes' Apps tab when you connect the iPhone to your computer.
