How to Connect a Home Theater In-A-Box Subwoofer to an A/V Receiver

by David Lipscomb Google

Home theater just isn't the same without a subwoofer. Providing the powerful low-frequency bumps and booms in today's movie soundtracks, adding a subwoofer is an exciting upgrade. Capable subwoofers are found in quality home-theater-in-a-box packages or multi-speaker and receiver packages. Connecting your HTIB subwoofer to the system's audio/video receiver is accomplished in two primary ways, depending on whether the subwoofer is amplified or not.

    Active (Powered) Subwoofers

    Step 1

Rotate the A/V receiver so you can see the back panel. Locate the "SUB" RCA output jack.

    Step 2

Plug the RCA cable into the "SUB" jack. Plug the other end into the subwoofer's "LFE" input.

    Step 3

Turn on the A/V receiver. Press the "Menu" or "Setup" button on the unit's remote control. Select "Speaker Settings" or similarly named option.

    Step 4

Toggle all speakers to their "Small" settings. Set the receiver's "Subwoofer" option to "Yes." This routes most of the bass from the small satellite speakers to the subwoofer.

    Step 5

Press "Setup," "Menu" or "Exit" to save your settings.

    Passive (Unpowered) Subwoofers

    Step 1

Access the rear panel of the HTIB receiver. Look for a bare wire spring terminal or proprietary jack labeled "SUB" or "SUBWOOFER."

    Step 2

Depress the spring terminals on the "SUB" jack. Insert the bare wires into their respective inputs, observing the manufacturer's color coding. Alternately, insert the proprietary plug connected to the wire leading from the subwoofer into the matching jack on the receiver.

    Step 3

Turn on the A/V receiver. Press the "Menu" or "Setup" button on the unit's remote control. Select "Speaker Settings" or similarly named option.

    Step 4

Toggle all speakers to their "Small" settings. Set the receiver's "Subwoofer" option to "Yes," routing the bass from the small satellite speakers to the subwoofer.

    Step 5

Press "Setup," "Menu" or "Exit" to save your settings.

    Tips

    • If your HTIB includes a passive sub and has a subwoofer preout jack, you can add a powered subwoofer for additional impact.
