How to Buy a Portable Digital TV

by William Lynch

Portable TVs have evolved with technology. Slim flat screens have replaced the clunky boxes of the past, making them even easier to take with you on camping trips, to sporting events or wherever you like to watch television when away from home. Today's digital portable TVs use an external antenna to receive digital signals from the air for improved reception over the old analog transmissions. Buying a digital portable TV requires knowing a few other key factors.

    Step 1

Evaluate your budget and determine how much money you're willing to spend on a new digital portable TV. High-end models retail for approximately $120 or less.

    Step 2

Consider screen type and size. Most modern portable TVs features an LCD display measuring between 5 and 10 inches. Larger screens add both weight and cost.

    Step 3

Examine the screen resolution and aspect ratio. Models with a 16:9 aspect ration are able to display widescreen content.

    Step 4

Check on the TV's battery life. Portable TVs rely on rechargeable batteries for power when away from an electrical outlet. The best models offer between 2 and 3 hours of service before requiring a recharge. Some portable TVs come with an AC adapter for additional power options.

    Step 5

Confirm the portable TV has built-in speakers for optimal audio performance and a headphone jack for private listening.

    Step 6

Check if the TV has built-in USB ports or memory card slots, which can be used to play recorded shows, movies and other digital content.

    Step 7

Check to see if the TV comes with a remote control. While many portable TVs are designed for handheld operation, remotes provide versatility and can aid in scanning for channels and in programming settings.

    Step 8

Evaluate the portable TV's additional features. Some models come with a carrying handle that transforms into a TV stand. Other extra features may include the abilities to operate as a radio tuner or to act as a digital picture frame.

    Step 9

Confirm the TV comes with a warranty. Most models offer a standard 1-year warranty to protect against faulty parts and performance.

    Tips

    • Live digital signals are not available in all areas. For those areas, purchase and download TV shows to your portable digital TV before you leave on your trip.
