How to Add Contacts to Your iPhone

by Joe Murray

Whether you want to transfer your contacts to your iPhone from another source by syncing the phone with iTunes on your computer, use the iCloud service or add a single new contact on the fly, Apple makes it easy to do. Whichever method you choose, your iPhone keeps your contacts organized and accessible.

    Use the iPhone Contacts App

    Step 1

Tap “Contacts” on your iPhone and then tap "+" to get a blank New Contact screen. Tap the first field and a keyboard appears. Enter the new contact's name, phone number, email and website, if applicable. You can fill in as many or as few details as you choose.

    Step 2

Tap "Add Field" if you wish to include additional information about your contact.

    Step 3

Tap “Done” to save the contact information.

    Create Contact from Recent Caller

    Step 1

Open the "Phone" app on the iPhone. Tap “Recents” and scroll to the caller you wish to add to your contact list. Tap the arrow to the right of the recent contact to bring up the Info screen.

    Step 2

Select “Create New Contact” and fill in the appropriate fields. Note that the phone number of the contact is already filled in.

    Step 3

Tap “Done” to save the contact information.

    Add Contacts with iTunes

    Step 1

Open iTunes on your computer and connect your iPhone via a USB cable or wirelessly when the computer and your iPhone are on the same network.

    Step 2

Select your iPhone from the Devices menu. Tap “Info” on the iPhone toolbar.

    Step 3

Check “Sync Contacts” and select your contacts source.

    Step 4

    Click “Apply.”

    Add Outlook Contacts Through iCloud

    Step 1

Verify that your iPhone is running iOS 5 or later. From the Settings Menu, select “General” and then “Software Update” to find if there is an available update. If you need an update, connect your iPhone to iTunes on your computer and follow instructions.

    Step 2

Follow the directions in the setup instructions, which automatically launches in iTunes on your computer, to set up iCloud. If you wish to set up iCloud at a later time, select “iCloud” from the Settings icon and type in your Apple ID when you are ready to use iCloud.

    Step 3

Select “iCloud” from the Settings menu on the iPhone to bring up the iCloud options page. Tap the "On/Off" slider to the right of Contacts to turn on synchronization.

    Step 4

Download the iCloud control panel on your computer. Check “Contacts” to enable iCloud.

    Step 5

    Click “Apply.”

    Tips

    • ICloud syncs all of your iOS devices as well as your computer. Any contacts added on any device will automatically be added to all others. If you choose to use iCloud, it is not necessary to sync through iTunes.

    Warnings

    • If you are on a limited bandwidth program with your cellular provider, monitor your iCloud usage to avoid excess charges.
